In the 1980’s the military wanted a vehicle to replace the venerable Jeep and several other special purpose vehicles using one standard vehicle. They wanted a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle. They wanted the Humvee. They got it in 1984, originally produced by American Motors. Of course, just as civilians had coveted the old Jeep, they coveted the new Humvee. They got there also in the Hummer. The Hummer is a high end Sports Utility Vehicle that has become a status symbol far beyond its usefulness as a terrain hopping four-wheel drive vehicle. General Motors acquired the HUMMER from American Motors in 1998 and has produced them to date.
