In 1983 Eiji Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota Motors, secretly asked his closest executives if they could produce a luxury automobile that could compete with the best in the world. In 1989 they did it. Lexus is now the premier luxury car produced in Japan. Since 1989 when the LS400 was unveiled at North American International Auto Show, it was clear this was not a fancy Toyota. With its 4.0 V8 engine and rear wheel drive this was a completely different car.Now producing four different models of Sedans, two convertibles, three Luxury Utility Vehicles and some of each of these in hybrids, the answer to Mr. Toyoda’s question seems apparent.
