Wilhelm Maybach along with son Karl, started Maybach in 1909, and although the German automaker also built engines for the German War efforts of both WWI and WWII, Wilhelm Maybach’s passenger vehicles defined luxury of its time. From the 1920s through the 1940s, only the most affluent driver could own a Maybach, and many of them did. Unfortunately, after WWII the company never went back to making luxury cars. Finally, in 1997, with the blessings of Wilhelm’s great grandson Ulrich Schmidt-Maybach, Mercedes Benz reestablished the Maybach name with the introduction of the Maybach 57 and 62.
