Although Mazda started making cars in the 1920s in Japan, the vehicles have only been sold in the United States since the 1970s. Seeking to set itself apart from other Japanese auto makers, Mazda focused on the creation of the Wankel rotary engine. However, even with that engine’s success, Mazda did not give up on piston engines, which allowed them to have continued sales success during the fuel shortages of the 1970s. Today Mazda is part of Ford, and continuously wins award after award including Car and Driver’s “10-best”, along with awards for high resale value. Interestingly, initial sale prices are extremely reasonable even for the Mazda Miata convertible.
