Saturn was GM’s great experiment that probably turned out better than they ever expected. In 1991, they needed an exceptional, affordable car to meet overseas competition, but it was more than that. Saturn turned out to be a re-creating of attitudes. One might say it was built by consensus. No one claims credit for its inception, and in this instance the management went to the United Auto Workers for advice. This was not just one new car; it was to be a whole new division with its own name. The first time that had happened at GM since 1918. The resulting vehicle that rolled out of the factory has proved exceptionally popular.
