Smart cars were developed from an interesting collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and Swatch (Yes, the watch people). Apparently, Swatch had an idea for new kind of car, took the idea to Mercedes-Benz, who took up the challenge. The Smart Fortwo made its appearance in 1998, and made a big splash with the press. Because smart cars are extremely small, heavy emphasis was placed on safety. Mercedes-Benz designed the Tridion Safety Cell that surrounds the passengers of the small car and makes use of an energy displacement system. Additionally, the car has ABS brakes and electronic stability control. The result was a safe, economical vehicle that has experienced overwhelming success.
